Pawpaw trees are an interesting ornamental native fruit tree with a pyramidal shape with large 12-inch, tropical looking leaves. Moderate to slow growing, trees can reach up to 25 feet but can be kept smaller by annual pruning. Mature trees produce odd-shaped, oval fruits up to 1 lb. each. Fruits turn from light green to brown when ripe and have a creamy custard-like texture that is deliciously sweet. The banana-flavored fruits are high in protein as well as Vitamins A and C. Pawpaw prefers moist, slightly acidic soil and shade to part shade. Naturally disease and pest resistant. Plant 2 trees 15 to 20 feet apart for proper pollination. Bears in 2 to 5 years. Well rooted, small potted trees. Zones 5 to 9.
