Like other melon types, cantaloupe seeds can be direct sown after all threat of frost has passed and soils have warmed or start seeds in plantable Jiffy® peat pots or Jiffy-7® Extra deep peat pellets about 4 weeks prior to last frost date. This is a necessity since melon roots are sensitive to disturbance. Along with adding ample amounts of organic matter, adding the recommended amount of Osmocote® 14-14-14 plant food per planting hill helps to keep melon plants well fed. Space most varieties 2-3 ft. apart in rows, with rows 4-6 ft. apart.
