Okra Seeds

Okra is a unique warm season crop that is related to both Hibiscus and Cotton. In late spring to early summer, sow okra seeds in warm, well-drained organically rich soil. Plant seeds 1/2" deep, 12 inches apart, with 3 to 4 ft. between rows. Note that short day lengths (less than 11 hrs.) can keep okra plants in a vegetative growth state, preventing fruiting until much later in the season. Likewise, soil too high in nitrogen can prevent fruiting. Since okra seeds have a thick seed coat, prior to planting soaking the seeds for 8 hrs. starting with warm water, is recommended. Most varieties mature in 50-60-days.
