Odd-shaped fruits turn from light green to brown with a creamy, custard-like texture and delicious, sweet banana-like flavor. Also called Hoosier Banana. An interesting ornamental native fruit tree with a pyramidal shape and large, 12 in., tropical looking leaves. Slow growing, maturing up to 12 to 25 ft., but can be kept smaller if pruned. Fruits can be as large as 1 lb., ripen in September and are high in protein, Vitamins A and C. Harvest fruits when colors turn from green to yellow. Prefers moist, slightly acidic soil and shade to partial shade. Naturally disease and pest resistant. Plant two trees 15 to 20 ft. apart for proper pollination. Bears in 2 to 5 years. Yields an average of 30 plus lbs. Grown from seed of superior, large-fruited varieties, these seedlings bear good quality fruit and also serve as pollinators for grafted varieties. We offer well-rooted, small potted seedlings. Zones 5-9.
