This Oregon heirloom was selected by Pike and Young Seeds in Monmouth, Oregon in the 1930's - the result of a cross between Spear and Heart of Gold. Originally bred for its ability to thrive in heavy, dry soil. When grown under these conditions, melons average about 3 lbs. each. However, when grown in rich, irrigated soils, their size doubles up to 7 lbs. Plants are vigorous and high yielding producing fruits that are heavily netted. Flesh is light-orange, fragrant, juicy and sweet. An excellent choice for both home gardens and farmers markets.
