Interesting heirloom dating back to the mid 1600s. Large 6 to 7 foot vines with masses of vivid scarlet blooms are very ornamental and produce loads of beans. Short, plump green pods which are shorter than other runner types, contain 2 to 4 beans that change from pink to purple and finally to a glossy black. Immature pods can also be eaten like sugar snap peas. Very attractive to hummingbirds. 70 days for fresh beans, 100 days for dry beans.
